TERRIBLEMAN
I have been a literary translator and writer for a decade now and have had the good fortune to work on some extraordinary books and with some fascinating authors - among them Michel Houellebecq, Ahmadou Kourouma, Yasmina Khadra, Boualem Sansal, Almudena Grandes, Alonso Cueto, and Marcelo Figueras.
A non-fiction book, “I Was Vermeer”, was published by Bloomsbury UK/US and published in Italy, Japan, Poland and Brazil (where it briefly made the bestseller list). It was a Radio 4 Book of the Week (read by Anton Lesser), and is being adapted for the National Theatre by playwright Lucinda Coxon
In 2001, I gave up the day job to write and translate full time. It’s horribly badly paid, but I love it more than any of the multifarious careers I’ve managed to blag my way through in what is frighteningly close to being half a century.
